Two years in a row the BDAFL Women's trial day has been called off due to some unfavourable wet weather conditions. So last Saturday our Muswellbrook Cats Ladies took to Singleton along with Port Stephens to play a couple of short games to prepare for the season ahead. The games were two 15 minute halves with a 5 minute halftime break.
First up we played Singleton and although they came away with a 39-0 win there was a lot of positives to take away from our performance. We came out firing in the first half getting the ball to our forwards a few times but just couldn't turn it into points. The second half proved a lot more challenging when the Roosters pushed all there players up into there forward line making our defence work.
Our second and last game was against one of the newcomers this year, Port Stephens. It was a very close game with both teams kicking a goal each in the first half. Our second half was hard fought and we worked well to make sure Port Stephens didn't kick any goals. Muswellbrook Cats only goal kicker for the day was powerhouse mid-forward Gyarn Rawson kicking all 3 goals making the final score 3.4.22 to 1.1.7.
Muswellbrook Cats women's coach Ken Garland was impressed with the day and said "considering we had a handful of quality players out today it was awesome to see the new girls step up and everyone do their bit for the team. It was good to get a win today to get the girls a bit more confident and get that fire in their belly before the start of the season"
Garland also made special mention to Caterina Zanier saying "I was extremely impressed with her performance doing the ruck duties for the first time with both our nominated rucks out today"
Both the men and women catters will now travel to The Entrance to take on The Entrance Bateau Bay on Saturday the 7th April to get their 2018 season underway, in what will both be really promising matches.
